Hosting Linux or Windows for personal/business website

Question about hosting comparison:

“Hey guys I asked this question recently and got some good answers. I followed up by ringing a provider who said I could go either windows or linux depending on what i am going to use to script. Basically whatever I choose to I am learning PHP and eventually ASP (Windows).

From reading endless comparisons I am now confused. The hosting provider told me the price is the same regardless. The forums say windows server is expensive and linux is free? I have an XP machine, will have win7 soon. Can someone help me in what i have to do in order to go forward.”

Expert Answer: You are not alone. Web hosting is one of the most important part of your web presence and can mean the success and failure for your business. Here is a short guide in deciding which one suit you best either Linux Hosting or a Windows type of hosting service:

Common Misconception

Some people thought thought that there won’t be any much difference if they use Linux hosting or a Windows hosting service. Additionally, a lot of them are confused on which one to use Linux or Windows hosting.

Clarification

It is important to identify what is your hosting requirement so that you won’t regret it later on. Some scripts or programming languages you use in making your websites run on a specific operating systems which might be a problem if you use the wrong operating ssystem of your hosting service. Aside from that, Linux is cheaper than Windows hosting which might also be a factor in deciding which really is appropriate to use.

Difference between Linux and Windows Hosting

Linux hosting is cheaper than best windows hosting. Linux provides a state of stability and speed which means Linux web servers will crash less often than windows web servers and Linux runs most processes faster than Wndows. Linux provides supports on numerous software, programs, languages, and databases for instance PHP, Perl, PostGre, MySQL, PostgreSQL and a lot more making it very scalable. For it’s disadvantage, Linux isn’t capable of hosting websites that uses Microsoft technologies such as Access, ASP, MS SQL, or VB development tools.

Windows hosting can run Microsoft software such as Access and MS SQL databases. Windows servers supports Microsoft’s programming conditions like Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Fundamental Scripts, MS Index Server. Customer can develop their sites while using the familiar interface of Microsoft tools like, Visual Interdev, and Microsoft Access. With ASP clients will receive a database-driven site using Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL as its database.

People say that Windows is more expensive because hosting providers that offer Windows hosting generally charge more than hosting providers that only have Linux offerings. You can get free Linux hosting at places like freehostia.com but you cannot get free Windows hosting anywhere.

I try to stay away from the Microsoft-centric languages. Here’s why:

ASP and Dot Net technologies will run on:
    Microsoft Servers with IIS

    PHP will run on:
Microsoft Servers with IIS, Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
Linux with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
Solaris with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
FreeBSD with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
OpenBSD with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
NetBSD with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
Apple MacIntosh with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
HP-UX with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
AIX with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
    You get the idea.

Yep, I’d go Linux. It’s just far more flexible. I don’t see nearly as many sites using ASP as I do PHP anyway.

The company will provide you with linux or windows. You don’t have to do anything yourself. That’s the best part haha.

Yes, you are right. Based on the programming language and any software you want to use, you might want to choose either windows or linux hosting. PHP runs on both Linux as well as Windows and ASP.net runs on Windows. So if you want to use both eventually, then you might want to go for Windows hosting.

Generally (not always), Windows hosting is slightly costlier than Linux hosting. That is because the host doesn’t have to pay for Linux (its free) but he has to pay to get Windows licenses to install on the hosting server, so they increase the cost of Windows hosting to cover for that cost. However, some hosts, in order to get an edge over others don’t charge you more for Windows hosting and the host you would have contacted would be in the same league.

The hosting environment is completely independent of what you have on your computer. You can have any OS and that doesn’t matter. Only the scripting language + software (discussed above) matters.
