Hosting Linux or Windows for personal/business website

Question about hosting comparison:

“Hey guys I asked this question recently and got some good answers. I followed up by ringing a provider who said I could go either windows or linux depending on what i am going to use to script. Basically whatever I choose to I am learning PHP and eventually ASP (Windows).

From reading endless comparisons I am now confused. The hosting provider told me the price is the same regardless. The forums say windows server is expensive and linux is free? I have an XP machine, will have win7 soon. Can someone help me in what i have to do in order to go forward.”

Answer:
It depends upon your budget though. If you need to use both php and asp.net, you should use windows. Otherwise you can use Linux.

It is advisable to get a hosting account from a company that specializes on website hosting instead of getting a hosting plan from your Internet service provider. For example, we recommend you try MyHosting Premium plan where you can host both Windows and Linux websites on one hosting plan. If you are looking for a web hosting service with a very good rating at Better Business Bureau or if you need a reliable “unlimited” hosting service, we highly recommend you go with myHosting. If you are looking for a company with very few bad review, then try search for MyHosting review to see what we mean. They also give free domain name, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage, unlimited add-on domains, friendly Site builder and much more for such a low monthly price. You can get MyHosting for only $4.84/month.

MyHosting Coupons: If you need a VPS for your business, you can enter the Coupon Code below during checkout to get Up to 6 months FREE on VPS plans at MyHosting. If you want both Windows (Microsoft) and Linux Platform in one hosting plan, including unlimited diskspace and bandwidth, with 20 Exchange-based Email – then the coupon below takes $10 off the Premium myHosting plan which includes both Linux and Windows features.

People say that Windows is more expensive because hosting providers that offer Windows hosting generally charge more than hosting providers that only have Linux offerings. You can get free Linux hosting at places like freehostia.com but you cannot get free Windows hosting anywhere.

I try to stay away from the Microsoft-centric languages. Here’s why:

ASP and Dot Net technologies will run on:
    Microsoft Servers with IIS

    PHP will run on:
Microsoft Servers with IIS, Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
Linux with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
Solaris with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
FreeBSD with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
OpenBSD with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
NetBSD with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
Apple MacIntosh with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
HP-UX with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
AIX with Apache, Nginx, or Lighttp
    You get the idea.

Yep, I’d go Linux. It’s just far more flexible. I don’t see nearly as many sites using ASP as I do PHP anyway.

Don’t choose godaddy because of http://www.nodaddy.com

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 4 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

The company will provide you with linux or windows. You don’t have to do anything yourself. That’s the best part haha.

Yes, you are right. Based on the programming language and any software you want to use, you might want to choose either windows or linux hosting. PHP runs on both Linux as well as Windows and ASP.net runs on Windows. So if you want to use both eventually, then you might want to go for Windows hosting.

Generally (not always), Windows hosting is slightly costlier than Linux hosting. That is because the host doesn’t have to pay for Linux (its free) but he has to pay to get Windows licenses to install on the hosting server, so they increase the cost of Windows hosting to cover for that cost. However, some hosts, in order to get an edge over others don’t charge you more for Windows hosting and the host you would have contacted would be in the same league.

The hosting environment is completely independent of what you have on your computer. You can have any OS and that doesn’t matter. Only the scripting language + software (discussed above) matters.
